Tatarstan to mark Islam Acceptance Day

The republic of Tatarstan (the Volga region), one of Russia's muslim-populated regions, will be marking Islam Acceptance Day on May 21.

On this day in 922 the Volga Bulgaria, a historic predecessor of Tatarstan, accepted Islam as its state religion.
